چکیده

We describe ongoing work in the experi mental evaluation of a range of methods for measuring the phonetic distance be tween the dialectal variants of pronuncia tions All are variants of Levenshtein dis tance both simple based on atomic char acters and complex based on feature vec tors The measurements using feature vec tors varied according to whether city block distance Euclidean distance or a measure using Pearson s correlation coe cient was taken as basic Variants of these using fea ture weighting by entropy reduction were systematically compared as was the rep resentation of diphthongs as one symbol or two The results were compared to well established scholarship in dialectology yielding a calibration of the method These results indicate that feature representa tions are more sensitive that city block dis tance is a good measure of phonetic over lap of feature vectors that weighting is not useful and that two phone representations of diphthongs provide a more satisfactory base for this sort of comparison

Assimilation of Final Low Back Vowel in Eghlidian Dialect

In this article, the low back vowel /A/ in word-final positions in Eghlidian dialect, one of Persian dialects, is studied. This vowel is represented phonetically as [A], [o] and [@] in different phonetic environments. Therefore many words were collected via interviewing ten native speakers so that these different alternant forms can be accounted for appropriately. Since one of the authors of th...

Perceptive evaluation of Levenshtein dialect distance measurements using Norwegian dialect data

The Levenshtein dialect distance method has proven to be a successful method for measuring phonetic distances between Dutch dialects. The aim of the present investigation is to validate the Levenshtein dialect distance with perceptual data from a language area other than the Dutch, namely Norway. We calculate the correlation between the Levenshtein distances and the distances between 15 Norwegi...

Phonetically Conditioned Allomorphy of Functional Words in a Dialect of Southern Italy

This paper examines a particular kind of phonetic variation observed in the realization of articles and clitics in a dialect of Southern Italy. The examined bound morphs consist of single unstressed vowels, which appear to be phonologically underspecified with regard to height. The spectral characteristics of 157 tokens show that these vocalic segments form a continuum ranging from high to mid ...

Measuring Norwegian dialect distances using acoustic features

Computational dialectometry has been proven to be useful for finding dialect relationships and identifying dialect areas. The first to develop a method of measuring dialect distances was Jean Séguy, assisted and inspired by Henri Guiter (Chambers and Trudgill, 1998). Strongly related to the methodology of Séguy is the work of Goebl, although the basis of Goebl’s work was developed mainly in dep...
